Prof. Dr. med. Manfred R. Tetz, MD

Born in Jülich, Germany, Dr. Manfred Tetz went to medical school at the University of Marburg and the University of Aachen, from 1979 to 1986. After medical school, he went to the United States for a post-doctoral fellowship in ocular pathology under the direction of Dr. David Apple. The fellowship started at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, UT, and then the research center was transferred to the Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. During the 2 years of this fellowship, which was sponsored by a Feodor Lynen stipend of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), he worked with ocular pathology, experimental surgery with post-mortem animal and human eyes, evaluation of intraocular lenses and other implantable ocular biodevices, as well as new techniques in anterior segment surgery. He subsequently served his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg, from 1988 to 1992, at the end of which he was approved by the German Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Tetz received a faculty appointment with the rank of Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in 1993, at the University of Heidelberg, where he stayed until 1998. During the same time period he also served as the Director of the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory at that University. In 1998 he moved to Berlin, where he became Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Charité Hospital, of the Humboldt University. In 2003, he founded his own private Eye Center at the Spreebogen, where he serves as Director, as well as a Consultant of the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) Westend, both located in Berlin. In 2005 he established the Berlin Eye Research Institute (BERI). It is an institute entirely devoted to research in the field of Ophthalmology. The primary mission of the BERI is to perform studies on the biocompatibility and complications related to implantable ocular devices in general, studies on the optic characteristics of optic devices, as well as evaluate optic procedures not involving implantation, and organize wet labs for the evaluation of new techniques and devices, and for learning/practicing purposes.

Dr. Manfred Tetz has been one of the leading European experts in the field of anterior segment pathology and surgery. He and his group have published over 200 scientific papers, performed over 400 scientific presentations on the subject, and received different prizes for presentations, posters, and videos in international meetings. He has personally performed over 25.000 eye surgical procedures. He also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed Ophthalmology journals, including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (JCRS), Ophthalmology, and Graffe's Archives for Clinical an Experimental Ophthalmology.

He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and of the Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft - DOG (German Society of Ophthalmology). In 1996 he joined the very selective International Intra-Ocular Implant Club (IIIC Club). He is member of the Board of Directors of the Deutschsprachige Gesellschaft für Intraokularlinsen-Implantation und Refraktive Chirurgie - DGII (German Speaking Society of Intraocular Lens Implantation and Refractive Surgery). He was also recently elected for an initial four-year term as one of the members of the board of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS).
