Mona Tawfik, MD

A native of Gizeh in Egypt, Dr. med. Mona Tawfik studied in the German School in Cairo. She did her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cardiff, England, and the Free University in Berlin, Germany, where she graduated in 1981. After some experience in general medicine, she started her training in pathology at the Institute of Pathology of the Community Hospital Berlin Neukölln (Prof. Dr. P.-H. Krause). She underwent an intensive training in tumor pathology, as this hospital was a reference center for oncology. This training was complemented with trainings in cytology (Prof. J. Frost) performed at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, in hematopathology (Prof. Georgii) at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany, and in DNA cytometry of mamma carcinoma (Prof. Auer) at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

She authored different publications about mamma carcinoma and gastrointestinal systems, and also participated in different international meetings with scientific presentations and posters. Since 1984 she works as a senior pathologist.

In 1996, she established a private Institute of Pathology in Berlin, which offers a complete service in surgical pathology, cytology, and autopsy. The conventional histopathology is supplemented by technologies of molecular pathology, e.g. immunohistochemistry, DNA cytometry, and in vitro hybridization. The process for accreditation of her Institute of Pathology in the German quality management started in June 2006, and should be completed in the beginning of 2007.

Dr. Tawfik is currently a member of the Pathology Society (Gesellschaft für Pathologie), the Association of German Pathologists (Berufsverband Deutscher Pathologen), the International Academy of Pathology (Internationale Acadamie für Pathologie), and the Senology Society (Gesellschaft für Senologie).
